![]() ![]() Sure there are battles fought, and feats of strength attempted. Not much actually gets done that would generally make for an excellent fantasy read. It was only until the very last book in which you get any serious ‘revelations.’Īs this is the first prequel story, and origin of Riyria if you will, the actual tale told is very odd. But, although the books can be read as one-off adventures, they sometimes feel like large pieces to a jigsaw puzzle you haven’t seen the actual cover of before beginning. ![]() He, in miraculous fashion, wrote all 6 of the Riyria Revelations books before publishing any. One of MJS’s best qualities as a writer, seems to also be one of his biggest issues when reading his books individually. As it’s the first in a potential 6-book prequel saga to the original Riyria Revelations series, this makes sense. This notion, of a book being altogether better than it actually is because you learn to love and enjoy the character dynamics and relationships, is served best in The Crown Tower. But as a team, Royce and Hadrian become more than the sum of their parts, and so too they push the book affectionately along to a place where you end up loving it more than you realized you probably should have. Royce, particularly, seems almost a hopeless case by the start of this novel. His characters are very troubled, and on occasion very dark. ![]() Sullivan’s books are a strange sort of success. ![]()

![]() ![]() Coincidentally, his eye then falls on a pair of old books he bought years ago– Megapolisomancy: A New Science of Cities by one Thibaut de Castries, and a journal apparently kept by Clark Ashton Smith of Weird Tales fame–and it strikes him that these might have something to do with that mystery. ![]() Our Lady centers on Franz Westen, a widowed and formerly alcoholic pulp writer with a lot of time on his hands in ’70s-era San Francisco (in short, a rather obvious stand-in for Leiber himself) who is intrigued by a figure–a “pale brown thing” he spots in Corona Heights Park from his apartment window. ![]() After reading the book itself, some will enthusiastically agree, but others will find themselves completely confused by the accolades. This year Tor Books reissued the book in its own volume, with endorsements on the cover identifying it as a “Masterpiece,” a “pioneering work of modern urban fantasy,” and the “greatest novel” of the storied career of Fritz Leiber (1910-1992). In 1977 The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction published Fritz Leiber’s novel “The Pale Brown Thing.” Under its subsequent (and far more evocative) title Our Lady of Darkness the following year, that novel won the World Fantasy Award in its category, and today enjoys the status of a classic. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But the book is indeed overtly political, with the Bugs described in no uncertain terms as representing communism, and several key passages muse on the benefits of authoritarianism over a free democracy. The book is also filled to the brim with minutiae and detail, exploring the command structure and tactics of the Mobile Infantry, making it often feel like a technical manual. For those familiar with the movie, it might raise an eyebrow to learn that the combat action only plays a small role in the book, with Heinlein much more interested in discussion of moral philosophy, critiques of early 20th century liberalism, individual rights, and responsibility to the collective. ![]() ![]() Her Irish luck holds out – the man doesn’t give her away. With the police hot on her trail, she slips aboard the boat and brazenly presents herself as the new wife of a handsome stranger, deep in conversation with another man. She sells patent medicines, and a rival has accused her of killing one of his patients. Thank goodness Brenda Hiatt created the characters of Kent and Della rather than another Jack and Rose, because Ship of Dreams is neither contrived nor artificial – it’s a fine read.ĭella Gilliland is fleeing a false accusation of murder when she stows away on a steamer out of San Francisco harbor. ![]() ![]() So when I began this book, a romance set aboard another real life doomed sea voyage, I wasn’t sure what to expect. ![]() I hope I won’t need my fire extinguisher, but here goes – I found the romance in Titanic to be contrived and artificial. ![]() ![]() ![]() Born in Chicago, he was grew up in the prosperous suburb of Oak Park. ![]() Įrnest Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American writer of novels and short stories. It was during these years that the as-of-yet unpublished young writer gathered the material for his first novel The Sun Also Rises, and the subsequent masterpieces that followed. ![]() A correspondent for the Toronto Star, Hemingway arrived in Paris in 1921, three years after the trauma of the Great War and at the beginning of the transformation of Europe's cultural landscape: Braque and Picasso were experimenting with cubist form James Joyce, long living in self-imposed exile from his native Dublin, had just completed Ulysses Gertrude Stein held court at 27 Rue de Fleurus, and deemed young Ernest a member of une generation perdue and T.S. Begun in the autumn of 1957 and published posthumously in 1964, Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast captures what it meant to be young and poor and writing in Paris during the 1920s. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Readers are sure to be fascinated by some of the material here, such as how the EEG machine had its origins in the telepathy research of Hans Berger, and Radin’s description of a ‘future experiment’ which would prove psi…which has actually already taken place! Radin starts by laying the foundations of the book, recounting the history of psi, of quantum physics, and also his own involvement in parapsychology. But what we’ve seen so far provides a new way of thinking about psi…psi is reframed from a bizarre anomaly that doesn’t fit into the normal world – and hence is labeled paranormal – into a natural phenomenon of physics. ![]() Science is at the very earliest stages of understanding entanglement, and there is much yet to learn. Radin sets out his thoughts on the matter right at the beginning of the book: Titled Entangled Minds, this latest effort is an updated version of his previous best-seller – in that he goes through the latest research into various areas of parapsychology – with the added theme of contemplating quantum entanglement as a possible mechanism behind psi effects. Now, after a nine year hiatus from ‘popular publishing’ (he has remained active in writing for specialised groups and also in scientific publishing), Radin returns with a new book on the topic. ![]() ![]() ![]() This must not have been an easy performance due to the style of the aforementioned prose-especially in the second half of the book because it's a stream-of-consciousness narrative. Koja's prose, and Joshua Saxon the narrator brought it home with flare. What happened to these items when they were thrust inside? You'll have to read this to find out! They stuck different things into the hole, (getting uncomfortable yet?), including bugs, a mouse, and then a hand. This is the story of Nakota and Nicholas who one day found a black hole, named it the funhole, and changed their lives forever. It may not be as big as some, Stephen King's say, but there are joys to be found in smaller congregations. ![]() I've only recently joined the church of Koja. THE CIPHER! I don't even know what to say. ![]() ![]() ![]() The six full-length novels are all narrated by Juliette as she rebels and fights against The Reestablishment.
